Your Own +1 American Number, or a US Number for One Code
Yes, NumberFlare gives you a United States (+1) number two ways, and both are self-serve. A US Cloud Number for calls and two-way SMS starts from $1.95/month and works seconds after purchase, with no documents. If you only need one verification code, Instant OTP provides a US number from $0.20 per code and charges you only when the code arrives.
What does a US phone number look like?
American numbers have 10 digits: a three-digit area code followed by a seven-digit local number, often written as (555) 555-0123. There is no leading zero to drop. The country code is +1, which the United States shares with Canada, Puerto Rico and several Caribbean territories under one numbering plan.
A few practical points for sign-up forms:
- Many US-built sites expect just the 10 digits and assume +1. Typing +1 in front can trigger an error on those forms.
- International forms usually show a country list. Pick United States, not Canada, even though both display +1.
- Mobile and landline numbers share the same format, so the area code alone does not tell you which kind of line it is.
Verification texts from American services arrive in English and tend to be short: the code, the brand name and sometimes a note about how long the code stays valid.
Why use an American number when you live somewhere else?
The US is the home market for a large share of the apps and platforms people sign up for, and many of them work best with a +1 number on the account. Common, legitimate reasons to get one:
- Serving US customers with a local number they can call or text without international charges.
- Running a remote team or a startup that needs a shared US line, separate from anyone's personal phone.
- Testing your own product before launching it to American users, including phone number validation and SMS flows.
- Keeping a second phone number for sign-ups so your personal mobile stays out of marketing lists.
If your audience spans North America, compare our Canada page, since Canadian numbers are also instant on NumberFlare. Puerto Rico rounds out the trio of self-serve countries.
Choosing an area code for a US Cloud Number
The United States is one of the three countries where Cloud Numbers are fully self-serve. In the dashboard you pick the country, then an area or city, then the exact number you like. It is yours seconds later, with no address proof or ID upload.
Picking the area code is the one real decision. If your customers are concentrated in one city, a matching local code feels familiar to them. If they are spread across the country, any code works and you can simply pick a number that is easy to read aloud.
Every US Cloud Number includes:
- calling from Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, with no app, SIM or hardware
- an SMS inbox for incoming and outgoing texts
- call logs and a contacts list
- forwarding to your mobile, and voicemail when you cannot pick up
Plans start from $1.95/month. The number renews on the same plan from your wallet, and you can release it whenever you like. Our US virtual number page covers the features in more depth.
Sending business texts from a US number
Receiving texts on a US Cloud Number works from day one. Sending is different when the messages are business texts going to US recipients: American carriers require business texting registration, often referred to as A2P 10DLC, before that traffic is accepted reliably. Plan for this step if you intend to send appointment reminders, order updates or support replies from your number. Calls are not affected by this requirement.
How do I receive a single US verification code?
For one-off sign-ups, Instant OTP is the lighter option. The current US list includes Amazon, ChatGPT (OpenAI), Discord, Claude, Uber, Snapchat, Telegram, X (Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Netflix, and more than 5,000 services overall.
- Open Instant OTP and select the service.
- Choose United States as the country and review the price shown.
- Paste the +1 number into the service's form (10 digits only if the form already assumes the US).
- Watch the live inbox; the code usually shows up within a minute or two.
- Enter the code to complete verification.
Your US number stays reserved for a 20-minute window. Codes start from $0.20 per code, and the charge applies only if a code is delivered. Otherwise the money is refunded to your wallet without you asking. For receive-only use cases, see how to receive SMS online in the United States.
Troubleshooting a US code that doesn't show up
- Give it the whole 20 minutes. A slow code is far more common than a lost one.
- Look at how you entered the number. A doubled +1, or the wrong country chosen in the picker, can make the service reject the number or stall the request.
- Confirm the service accepts virtual numbers. Some platforms decline them, and the automatic refund exists for exactly that case.
- Request a fresh number later. A different US number for the same service can succeed where the first did not.
Use every platform within its terms, with one account per real person or business.
Should I buy a Cloud Number or just use Instant OTP?
Think about the future of the account. Instant OTP suits a sign-up you will not need to verify again by SMS, because the number is only yours for a single code. A Cloud Number suits anything you will log back into, recover, or hand out to other people: a business line, an account protected by two-step SMS, or a number on your website. Given how quickly a US Cloud Number activates, there is little reason to rely on a one-time number for an account you care about.
Paying for US numbers in your NumberFlare wallet
Sign up with your email and confirm the 6-digit code we send; two-factor authentication is available for extra security. Then top up your prepaid USD wallet by card or with USDT/USDC. That first top-up unlocks buying and reveals the exact Instant OTP price for each US service. Checkout uses your wallet balance first, and a PDF invoice is emailed for top-ups and number purchases. Plan details are on the pricing page.
