The leading zero: how to type a +44 number

British numbers trip people up because of the trunk prefix. Inside the UK, mobile numbers are written starting with 07. Internationally, that leading 0 is dropped and replaced with +44, so the same number begins +44 7.

Most UK web forms handle either style, but not all of them. A few rules of thumb:

• If the field already shows +44 in a dropdown, enter the number without the leading 0.
• If the field is a single free-text box, try the full +44 format first.
• Never type both: "+44 07..." is a common reason a code never gets sent.
